Emergency Fix: Microsoft Rushes Patch for Critical Windows Recovery Bug

On 21 October 2025, it was reported that the cumulative update KB5066835 for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 introduced a bug that affected keyboards and mice in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), leaving users unable to access recovery options. Microsoft has already used its Known Issue Rollback mechanism to address the localhost access problem, restoring developer access to localhost and 127.0.0[.]1, but the WinRE input failure remains unresolved without an out-of-band emergency update.

Microsoft has released the emergency out-of-band update KB5070773, which is being automatically deployed to all users with internet connectivity to keep WinRE usable in future failures; manual installation is also possible via the Microsoft Update Catalog. For those stuck inside WinRE, there is no practical recovery method until an additional solution is provided. According to Microsoft Update Catalog, the patch can be downloaded directly for manual application.
