A Strategic Pivot: Alphabet’s Verily Shuts Down Its Medical Devices Division to Focus on AI
Alphabet’s life sciences arm Verily is shutting down its medical devices division and laying off staff, with the number affected undisclosed. The move, announced as part of a broader strategic pivot to artificial intelligence and data infrastructure, sees Verily refocus on precision health powered by AI and data analytics rather than hardware manufacturing.
In a statement, CEO Stephen Gillett noted that the medical devices business was never a primary revenue generator but had delivered value to medical research and clinical care, citing achievements such as the Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring system and the Stargazer VNRC drug-screening platform, which has supported clinical testing for over 7,800 patients.
Since Alphabet’s 2023 restructuring, in which about 12,000 employees were laid off, the group has increasingly channelled resources into AI, cloud computing and data-driven initiatives; this shuttering of Verily’s device arm is presented as further realignment. Verily will instead position itself as a platform provider of medical data and AI services, prioritising AI-assisted diagnostics and digital health architecture, according to Business Insider.
