META has settled a major child safety case for up to $17 billion, which includes implementing a default two-hour daily limit for teens on Instagram and Facebook. This limit can only be overridden by a parent, alongside overnight restrictions and other protective measures. The case, led by a coalition of 51 state attorneys general, accused Meta of violating various laws by creating addictive products for young users without adequate warnings. By settling, Meta reduces potential penalties significantly.
Key terms of the settlement also include restricting access during certain hours, hiding likes from accounts under 18, and enhancing reporting responses. An independent auditor will oversee compliance with these regulations.
