Excel’s New Brain: Agent Mode Brings GPT-5.2 and Claude 4.5 to Desktop

EXCEL has extended its AI Agent Mode to Excel for Windows and macOS, integrating with the Copilot interface and offering a model selector that lets users designate their preferred computational “brain.” At present, the primary offerings are GPT-5.2 and Claude Opus 4.5, available to Microsoft 365 subscribers across Business, Personal, and Family plans, though usage quotas may vary.

The feature defaults to an automatic setting that selects the optimal model for each task, and the agent is able to exfiltrate data from the internet to synthesize visualisations, orchestrate entire workbooks, and fix formulaic anomalies rapidly. To use these capabilities, users must have a current installation of Excel for Windows or Mac, click the Microsoft Copilot icon, and enable “Agent Mode” from the utility menu.

Owing to regional regulatory constraints, these functionalities are currently withheld from users within the European Union and the United Kingdom, with Microsoft historically deploying enhanced data sovereignty protections in those jurisdictions after a developmental hiatus.
