Simpler AI Vendor Checks Urged to Replace Complex Questionnaires

The article emphasizes the inadequacy of current AI vendor assessment questionnaires, which are often overly complex and fail to effectively measure actual compliance and risk. It suggests that a simpler, more standardized approach—similar to the surgical checklists in medicine and pre-flight checklists in aviation—could enhance the effectiveness of AI evaluations.

Key points include the criticism of poorly designed, free-text questions that allow for vague responses, and the need for questions that are clear, measurable, and relevant to the specific risk level of the AI system. The author proposes five criteria for effective questions: they should be answerable with concrete evidence, scoped to reflect risk levels, measurable or binary, relevant to decision-making, and standardized for reuse across different frameworks. Ultimately, establishing a standardized model card could streamline compliance processes and improve efficiency.
