The IP Wall Falls: Disney Invests $1B in OpenAI to License 200+ Characters for AI

Disney has announced a landmark three-year collaboration with OpenAI, after investing USD 1 billion in OpenAI equity and receiving warrants to purchase additional shares in the future. The deal will allow OpenAI to incorporate more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars into Sora for video generation and ChatGPT Images for still-image creation, with access expected to open to fans in early 2026.

According to official disclosures, the licensing covers not only characters but costumes, props, vehicles and environments, while the agreement explicitly excludes the portraits or voices of real actors. The partnership positions Disney as a major enterprise customer of OpenAI, with both CEOs emphasising a human-centric approach to AI development.

The venture could see selected high-quality Sora-generated shorts showcased on Disney+ from early 2026, marking a notable shift in how Disney leverages AI-generated content. December 12, 2025.
