ChatGPT’s “Projects” Feature is Now Free for All Users

The Projects feature in ChatGPT has been extended to free users as of 4 September 2025, allowing all ChatGPT users to organise conversations around specific themes. Projects act like structured folders for dialogues and support custom instructions that shape how the AI responds, including constraints on what information and files may be referenced.

The update also increases the number of files that can be attached within projects: free-tier users may upload up to 5 files, ChatGPT Plus subscribers up to 25 files, and ChatGPT Pro users up to 40 files. Regardless of plan, users can personalise projects with colours and icons to help differentiate categories. The feature is currently available on the web and Android, with iOS support expected to roll out in the coming weeks. according to OpenAI.
