Labels for Machines: Google Proposes ai-disclosure Tags for Every Web Element

GOOGLE is exploring a standardised identification framework for AI-generated content based on explicit website declarations, with a new proposal called “AI Content Disclosure Attribute” emerging in the Chrome Platform Status registry. The mechanism would allow websites to annotate any HTML element with an ai-disclosure tag, signalling AI involvement in part or all of the text.

When activated, the Chrome browser would autonomously identify these marked passages and alert the user to their synthetic origins, while reminding them to verify the information. The proposal relies on the probity of the author, since deceptive actors are unlikely to adopt a label that could undermine their credibility or commercial interests.

According to Chrome Status, the proposal has been formally submitted to Chrome Status and Google has shown tangible interest in its adoption, though a definitive global deployment is expected to require a protracted developmental interval. January 28, 2026.
