The Ransomware Holiday Bind: Burnout or Be Vulnerable
There’s never a good time to get hit by ransomware, but the holidays, weekends and off-hours see attackers capitalising as security teams are stretched thin. Ransomware groups now operate almost like legitimate businesses, with structured attack steps and timing that often targets weekend and holiday downtime to exploit staff burnout, according to a recent Semperis report.
The study analysed responses from 10 countries and eight industry sectors and found that 52% of attacks in the past year occurred on weekends or holidays, with 78% of respondents reporting SOC teams cut by 50% or more, and 6% saying they did not staff SOC at all outside the regular workweek.
Cybereason has long noted that organisations remain unprepared to handle a holiday or weekend attack, a concern echoed by analysts such as Zach Riddle of Google Threat Intelligence Group, who notes that the majority of encryption events in 2024 began before 8am or after 6pm, and about 30% were started over the weekend.
The article emphasises that burnout and skeleton crews compound vulnerability, urging enterprises to maintain documented plans and consider measures like network segmentation and tabletop exercises to withstand off-hours assaults, particularly during holiday periods. 3 December 2025
