GCOT issues 6G security principles as Sweden and Finland join

THE Global Coalition on Telecoms (GCOT) has published principles for the security and resilience of 6G networks at Mobile World Congress 2026, with Sweden and Finland announced on the Tuesday as new members and GCOT founded in 2023 by Australia, Canada, Japan, the UK and the US. The principles are intended to form the base for 6G standards development, addressing resilience to cyber and physical attacks, supply chains, and reliability.

GCOT notes that 6G networks should implement security and resilience capabilities to prevent threat actors’ propagation, protect user data, maintain data integrity, ensure service availability, and comply with national regulations. It also states that the 6G system should be developed with security as a foundational principle, and should be designed to be more secure than previous generations while managing legacy vulnerabilities. As of March 2026, 6G remains in the research and pre-standardization phase, with initial commercial rollouts targeted for 2029–2030.
