OpenAI Launches Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, Teaming with Stripe to Reshape E-commerce
OpenAI has announced Instant Checkout, a feature that integrates transactions directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to complete purchases within the conversation interface without being redirected to external websites, according to CNBC. The innovation is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe, and the initial rollout covers single-item purchases from U.S. Etsy merchants, with plans to extend the technology to Shopify vendors and other brands.
Michelle Fradin, OpenAI’s Head of Commerce Products, said that shopping needs frequently arise in conversations, and embedding the purchase experience directly into the dialogue could make AI the central hub of the consumer journey. The move highlights OpenAI’s ambition to make ChatGPT a broader AI assistant capable of performing tasks beyond knowledge and creativity, including end-to-end commerce within a chat interface.
In its broader context, OpenAI and Stripe plan to open-source the Agentic Commerce Protocol to invite developers to extend transaction-as-a-service concepts to areas such as tickets and subscriptions. 1 October 2025.
