Google Appeals to Supreme Court to Halt Injunction from Epic Games Lawsuit

Google has again petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to suspend the injunction that Epic Games won last October, which would require the Google Play Store to open to third‑party app stores and is scheduled to take effect in mid-October. According to documents submitted by Google, the company seeks a temporary stay before October 17 to prevent the injunction from taking effect and to obtain a full review.

Google argues that immediate enforcement would pose severe risks to the platform, developers and consumers, including a flood of malicious, pirated and fraudulent app stores. It also warned that developers would need to monitor unauthorised app versions across multiple marketplaces, increasing costs and risks. The filing suggests the ruling would force changes to the Android ecosystem and the Play Store’s operating model, potentially impacting its advertising and revenue streams.

The article notes that Epic Games has achieved a broader set of concessions than those seen in similar actions against Apple, and observers say the Supreme Court’s response may differ this time.
