VR Vision Shift: Meta Pauses Third-Party Partnerships to Pivot Toward AI Smart Glasses

Meta has paused its third-party VR headset partnership programme, effectively delaying an ASUS ROG-branded gaming headset and a Lenovo mixed-reality device as it shifts resources toward its own Quest lineup. The company says it is refocusing on building world-class first-party hardware and software to drive the VR market forward, rather than supporting partner products. Since the initial 2024 announcement, neither ASUS nor Lenovo has released concrete product details, and the programme is now on hold.

The move follows Meta’s broader shift seen at this year’s Meta Connect, where attention to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and the Orion holographic display prototype appeared to be steering mass adoption away from bulky VR headsets. Earlier reporting from Bloomberg indicated budget cuts for VR and Horizon Worlds teams and a reallocation of resources toward AI-powered glasses and wearable devices.

Meta maintains it remains committed to long-term metaverse ambitions and will reassess opportunities for third-party hardware partnerships as product categories evolve.
