Privacy Alert: Meta to Use User-AI Conversations to Target Ads Across Facebook and Instagram

Meta has announced that it will begin collecting user–AI conversation data to refine its advertising and content recommendation systems across Facebook and Instagram. The policy will take effect on 16 December 2025, with users being notified via in‑app alerts and email starting 7 October 2025. According to The Wall Street Journal, the new policy offers no opt‑out option, meaning conversations used with the AI will be included in advertising datasets.

Meta says future interactions with its AI chatbots will be incorporated as input data to power more personalised content and adverts. The rollout will cover most regions globally, with the European Union and South Korea excluded at launch due to data protection regimes. Experts view the move as turning AI conversations into a core data source for precision advertising and a broader shift in how context from AI usage is monetised.
