Apple ends Mac Pro after scrapping M2 Extreme, M3 Extreme chips

Apple announced the discontinuation of the Mac Pro in March 2023, removing it from its website and confirming no successor will be produced. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman noted that the decision was not initially intended, as Apple had been secretly developing new chips for an upgraded Mac Pro, including M2 Extreme and M3 Extreme variants, but ultimately canceled due to high costs and low demand.

Additionally, two unreleased models were disclosed: an Intel-based Mac Pro (codename J170) and an M3 Ultra version (codename J190). The shift towards Apple Silicon’s architecture, which favors efficiency over modularity, contributed to the Mac Pro's retirement, as the Mac Studio now meets the needs of most professional users. The move marks the end of an era for enthusiasts of customizable hardware.
