Google Testing ‘Sponsored’ Ads Inside Gemini AI Search Results

23 November 2025. Google is accelerating the monetization of its AI-powered search experience and has begun testing the insertion of advertising content within the “AI Mode” results generated by the Gemini model. The ads currently appear at the bottom of the AI Mode output and are labeled as “Sponsored,” yet their visual style closely resembles the organic links, making them nearly indistinguishable at a glance.

A Google spokesperson clarified that this is not a new initiative but part of ongoing experiments the company has been conducting over the past several months, and Google emphasised there are no immediate plans to fully integrate ads into AI Mode, with the system currently prioritising organic results.

Analysts note the high operational costs of AI make advertising-based monetization all but inevitable, while reports suggest the AI industry is entering a phase of “enshittification,” with examples such as X introducing ads into its search results and OpenAI reportedly recruiting talent to explore turning ChatGPT into an advertising platform.
