How to set up two factor authentication (2FA) on your Instagram account

According to Malwarebytes, two-factor authentication (2FA) is a strong extra layer of defence for Instagram accounts, with options including text message (SMS), an authentication app (recommended), or a security key. The guide explains how to enable 2FA across Android, iPhone/iPad, and the web, starting with opening the Instagram app and logging in, then navigating to Accounts Center, Password and security, and Two-factor authentication.

On Android, users select their account, choose a verification method, and follow prompts such as entering an SMS code or scanning a QR code with an authentication app. On iPhone or iPad, you access Settings > Security > Two-factor authentication, then Get Started and choose Authentication app, Text message, or WhatsApp, with instructions to copy the setup key or scan the QR code as required.

In a web browser, you go to instagram[.]com, open Accounts Center > Password and security, and enable Two-factor authentication for the chosen account, noting that linked accounts may allow 2FA for both Instagram and the Meta account. Posted on 27 October 2025.
