Meet Your New Coworker: Anthropic’s Claude Now Controls Your Mac
Anthropic has unveiled Claude Cowork, a preview feature that lets Claude operate as an autonomous assistant for file management and automation on a Mac. Described as a simplified version of Claude for everyone, it aims to extend AI capabilities from chat into the user’s local hardware, reading, editing, or generating new files within a sandboxed, explicitly authorised environment.
Practical applications include automated directory organisation, where Claude can rename files based on content, and financial data extraction that can produce an Excel spreadsheet from receipts or invoices. It can also orchestrate across applications, for example via the Claude Chrome extension and its Connectors framework to interface with tools like Canva.
The company acknowledges risks such as potential disruption or inadvertent changes to local data, and emphasises that Claude Cowork is limited to the predefined boundaries of the sandbox with highly precise instructions recommended to prevent mistakes. Currently in a preview phase, Claude Cowork is exclusive to Claude Max subscribers and requires the macOS application, with other users placed on a waitlist.
