Microsoft Finally Fixes Windows 11 Bug Causing PCs to Auto-Restart Instead of ‘Update and Shut Down’

Windows 11 users have long faced a restart instead of a proper shutdown when selecting “Update and shut down” after updates. The article notes that, since at least 2023, this feature has not functioned as intended, with devices rebooting rather than powering off and continuing installation on the next boot. Microsoft has now addressed the issue in Windows 11 Dev Build 26220.6760 and later, stating that the potential problem preventing full shutdown after choosing “Update and shut down” has been fixed.

At present, the fix is available only in Windows Insider preview builds, so users on stable releases such as Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 may still experience the unwanted restart behaviour. Microsoft is expected to roll the patch to official builds soon, though no exact rollout date was provided.
