How to set up two-step verification on your WhatsApp account
Two-step verification, WhatsApp’s take on two-factor authentication, adds a PIN that must be entered when registering your phone number on a new device, helping to protect accounts even if an SMS code is compromised. The article explains how to enable it on Android by going to Settings, tapping Account, selecting Two-step verification, enabling it, creating a unique six-digit PIN, and optionally adding an email address for PIN recovery.
On iPhone or iPad, you open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Account, choose Two-step verification, turn on or set up a PIN, enter the six-digit PIN twice, and optionally add an email for recovery; a verification code may be sent to that email if you added it. It notes that you’ll need the PIN every time you verify your number or open the app periodically.
The piece emphasises that 2FA strengthens security beyond passwords and is a recommended practice for protecting important accounts, including messaging and social media. It was posted on 1 September 2025.
