Google Ordered to Pay $665 Million in German Antitrust Damages Over Google Shopping
A Berlin court has ruled that Google must pay a total of €572 million in damages to two German price-comparison platforms for abusing its dominant market position. The court ordered Google to compensate Idealo around €465 million and Producto about €107 million, with the ruling centring on Google’s self-preferencing by giving prominence to Google Shopping within search results.
Idealo argued the conduct created an unfair competitive advantage, while Google said it had already made changes in 2017 to offer competing platforms the same visibility. According to Reuters, the decision comes after Idealo filed the lawsuit in February, seeking far higher damages. This ruling adds to Google’s ongoing antitrust challenges in Europe, where the company has faced other penalties and scrutiny under the EU’s Digital Markets Act.
