Google Dismiss Reports of Major Gmail Security Alert
Google has dismissed widespread claims of a global Gmail security alert as entirely false, according to Google. The company emphasised that Gmail protections remain strong and that phishing and malware attempts are blocked from reaching inboxes by more than 99.9%. A limited June 2025 incident involving Google’s Salesforce database is at the centre of the confusion, with several outlets mis characterising it as a broad Gmail crisis and falsely claiming that 2.5 billion users had been warned.
The breach, attributed to the cybercriminal group ShinyHunters, involved social engineering and vishing against Google employees but did not compromise passwords, financial data, or sensitive personal information, and was contained within hours with affected parties notified by early August 2025. Google urged users to continue practising good security, including passkeys and robust two‑factor authentication, noting that threat actors have targeted businesses with stolen contact information for phishing campaigns.
The article highlights the importance of relying on official communications to avoid panic from sensationalised security headlines.
