Qualcomm Wins “Complete Victory” Over Arm in Major Chip Licensing Lawsuit
Qualcomm has secured what the article describes as a “complete victory” over Arm in a major chip licensing dispute, with a U.S. District Court on 1 October formally dismissing Arm’s last remaining lawsuit against Qualcomm. The case began in 2022 after Qualcomm acquired the chip startup Nuvia and integrated its CPU technology into its designs, with Arm alleging breaches of the Architecture License Agreement by transferring licensed technology to Qualcomm via the acquisition.
The court, following a jury verdict delivered in December of last year, ruled that Qualcomm had not breached the licensing agreement and that Nuvia’s technology could be lawfully used under Qualcomm’s existing architectural licence. Qualcomm’s General Counsel Ann Chaplin hailed the ruling as a “full and final victory” for Qualcomm and Nuvia, urging Arm to return to fair competition to sustain the health of the broader ecosystem.
Arm has said it intends to appeal, while industry observers, including Bloomberg via Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research, see the decision as a strategic win that could enable Qualcomm to deploy Nuvia’s technology across PCs, smartphones, automotive platforms, AI servers, and humanoid robotics. According to Bloomberg, the ruling could also sharpen Qualcomm’s challenge to Intel, AMD, and Apple in the PC and server markets.
