Digital Fraud at Industrial Scale: 2025 Wasn't Great
In 2025, advanced fraud attacks increased by 180%, driven by cybercriminals utilizing generative AI for creating realistic identities, deepfakes, and autonomous bots. A report by Sumsub highlighted a shift towards sophisticated, AI-driven fraud techniques, with incidents involving advanced deception rising from 10% to 28% of total fraud cases. Phishing remained the primary fraud method at 45%, while service-level data breaches accounted for 36% of incidents.
Despite a 15% decline in overall fraud rates in the US, the nature of attacks became more complex, with 21% involving synthetic identities. AI tools have industrialized digital fraud, prompting the need for enhanced identity verification and fraud detection measures.
