GITHUB faced a significant outage due to overwhelming traffic, which exposed critical internal infrastructure inefficiencies. CTO Vladimir Fedorov reported that the platform experienced a surge from 50 million monthly code commits in early 2023 to nearly 2.9 billion by August 2026. This sudden increase in activity led to a failure in scaling its resources quickly enough to meet demand.
To remedy this, GitHub is accelerating migration to Microsoft Azure and deploying an additional 3 million CPU cores and 120 petabytes of storage. The company is reallocating human resources to prioritize platform reliability, with a focus on enhancing testing, secure deployment, and alerting systems to improve overall stability.
