Clop Ransomware group claims the breach of The Washington Post
The Clop Ransomware group claims the breach of The Washington Post and has added the American daily newspaper to its Tor data leak site, stating that it will leak the stolen data soon. The group, also known as Cl0p, is described as a prolific Russian‑speaking ransomware‑as‑a‑service operation that targets high‑value organisations through big‑game extortion and data publication.
In mid‑October, Clop claimed the breach of The Washington Post, following earlier campaigns that published victims’ data on its data‑leak site. The article also notes that Clop’s campaigns have impacted organisations such as Shell, British Airways, Bombardier, the University of Colorado, PwC and the BBC, and highlights major campaigns including GoAnywhere MFT (2023), MOVEit Transfer (2023) and Accellion FTA (2020–2021), which exploited specific vulnerabilities (for example CVE‑2023‑0669 and CVE‑2023‑34362).
The group’s methods involve stealing data, encrypting networks, and pressuring victims by publishing stolen files to its data‑leak sites.
