MO: City of St. Joseph hit by cyberattack, data potentially acquired in breach
The City of St. Joseph suffered a significant cyberattack in early June, an incident that crippled network services for an extended period and potentially exposed the personal data of thousands of residents, city officials confirmed on Monday.
The city has spent more than $1 million on extensive upgrades to its cybersecurity and technology infrastructure since it first acknowledged via Facebook on 9 June 2025 that some services were down or temporarily unavailable due to network issues, later noting on 26 June 2025 it was investigating network security issues and no threat was posed to the public.
In a press release, the city said that while no evidence suggests information has been misused, it is possible that some data, including records from the police and health departments, could have been acquired by an unauthorized third party, according to News-Press NOW. The disclosure frame emphasises the potential reach of the breach rather than confirmed misuse. Authorities described the incident as an ongoing assessment of impact, with no official findings of data exfiltration at this stage.
