160,000 Impacted by Wayne Memorial Hospital Data Breach
Wayne Memorial Hospital announced that 160,000 individuals had their personal information exposed in a May 2024 data breach, which was identified on 3 June 2024 and involved ransomware. The attackers reportedly gained access between 30 May and 3 June 2024, encrypted data on hospital systems, and left a ransom note.
According to the hospital, information accessed included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s licence numbers, state ID numbers, user credentials, credit card numbers, health and medical data, and prescription details. The Maine AGO stated that 163,440 people were affected by the breach, and the hospital says it provided 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to those impacted.
In June 2024 the Monti ransomware group added Wayne Memorial Hospital to its Tor-based leak site, though the hospital did not name the threat actor; Comparitech says Monti has claimed 16 confirmed attacks, with the group appearing inactive since May 2025.
