Chrome Testing Vertical Tabs: New UI Feature Spotted in Canary Build

Chrome testing of vertical tabs has reached the Canary build, with engineers’ work on a vertical tab feature now visible in testing, though it remains unclear if it is part of an A/B experiment. After installing Chrome Canary, Landian[.]net reported that the feature did not appear and that no related experimental flags were visible, while testing by Windows Report suggests the vertical tab option is already accessible.

According to Windows Report, Google’s implementation appears rudimentary—functional but still rough around the edges—which implies further refinement in subsequent builds. In testing, the vertical tabs behave similarly to those in Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox; users can right‑click an open tab and select vertical tabs, causing the top row of tabs to shift to a vertically aligned list on the left of the window, with the existing tab search feature relocated to the upper-left corner.

Other capabilities, such as creating tab groups and renaming them, remain available, though the current UI is not polished. Chrome Canary users can update to the latest build to see whether the feature is enabled for them, with the newest Canary version reported as 144.0, suggesting vertical tabs would reach the stable Chrome release in around three months.
