Microsoft Security Change for Azure VMs Creates Pitfalls

Microsoft has delayed implementing a planned change that would switch Azure virtual networks to private subnets by default, a move intended to improve the security of cloud workloads but which could disrupt apps that expect public outbound access. The change was originally due to take effect on 30 September, but has been pushed to March 2026 after customer feedback, according to the article.

Experts warn cloud-operations teams to plan carefully for the switchover, as the shift could cause unintended behaviour changes if new networks no longer have automatic internet access. Microsoft emphasised that existing virtual networks and the VMs within them will not be affected, and that customers can retain the previous behaviour if they prefer.

A Microsoft spokesperson cited the measure as aligning with zero-trust principles and reducing exposure, while industry observers such as Brian Anderson of Cato Networks note the practical impact of outbound access changes on workloads. The piece also situates the change within Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, which seeks to strengthen tenant isolation and reduce legacy security risks across Azure. As with prior transitions, it highlights the value of infrastructure-as-code to manage the update smoothly.
