Alphabet’s Verily covered up HIPAA violations, whistleblower says in lawsuit
A whistleblower alleges that Alphabet’s health-tech subsidiary Verily used the health data of more than 25,000 patients without authorisation and actively covered up those violations. The executive, Ryan Sloan, claims Verily fired him after he reported HIPAA breaches to senior management. The allegations are set out in a pending federal case in San Francisco, filed late last year, which has not been previously reported.
The suit says Sloan’s concerns prompted actions within Verily, and a judge recently refused Verily’s bid to dismiss the civil complaint or compel arbitration, according to CNBC. The case remains ongoing, with Sloan’s claims described as allegations in a civil lawsuit.
