Security Shift: Google Retires Dark Web Report Service, Citing Inability to Offer Concrete Remedies
Google has announced that its Dark Web Report will be retired in February 2026, after previously expanding the service to all Google account holders, including users in Taiwan. The phase-out will occur in two stages: from 15 January 2026 the system will stop scanning for new dark web data breaches and will no longer trigger notifications, and from 16 February 2026 the service will be fully discontinued with the interface, settings and data permanently deleted.
According to Google’s announcement, the project’s core shortcoming was that, while it warned users about data exposure, it did not offer meaningful, actionable next steps beyond alerts. Consequently, Google intends to redirect resources toward developing security tools that deliver clearer guidance, and users are encouraged to rely on existing offerings such as Google Password Manager, Security Checkup, Passkeys and Results about you.
The shift represents a consolidation of Google’s security products, with monitoring capabilities expected to be absorbed into the backend of other services rather than maintained as a standalone report.
