Microsoft to Add New AI-Powered Actions in File Explorer

Microsoft is rolling out AI-powered actions in File Explorer, letting users interact with files more deeply without leaving the folder view. By right-clicking any supported file, a new “AI actions” menu entry will appear, from which users can access Copilot-powered features while staying in their workflow. The initial actions target image editing within Photos and include Bing Visual Search, Blur Background, Erase Objects, and Remove Background for formats such as .jpg, .jpeg, and .png.

Microsoft plans to extend AI actions beyond images to document-focused tasks, enabling right-click access to generate summaries, translate content, or ask Copilot to rephrase sections for Word, PDF, and text files. The feature is currently available to Windows Insiders in the Canary channel, with instructions to try it by selecting the AI actions option and choosing from the listed features. Feedback can be provided via the Feedback Hub to help refine AI actions before a broader release.
