TikTok Deal “Approved”? What We Know About the U.S. and China’s Agreement
Following a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the future of TikTok’s American operations, both sides expressed agreement on reaching a deal, though the precise details remain uncertain.
After the conversation, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that progress had been made toward an agreement and that the arrangement had been “approved”; according to Reuters, citing Chinese state media, Xi adopted a more cautious tone and said China hopes any outcome will comply with legal standards and serve the interests of both nations.
TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, issued a statement thanking both governments for their efforts and signalled that its American operations would remain stable while continuing to operate in accordance with Chinese law. Proposals under discussion include a new US-focused version of the TikTok app, with American investors expected to hold about 80% of shares and Chinese ownership capped below 20%, alongside potential financial benefits for the U.S. government.
For now, however, the agreement has not been finalised, and Trump has signed a fourth extension of the executive order banning TikTok in the U.S., giving until the end of December to resolve the matter.
