University of Hawaii Cancer Center: Hackers Stole Research Files, Encrypted Data
The University of Hawaii Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated centre in the state, reportedly faced a ransomware incident in August 2025 in which hackers stole research files and encrypted data. Cancer patients who took part in studies during the 1990s may soon be notified that their data were affected.
The centre told state officials in a December disclosure that it paid a ransom for a decryptor key in exchange for the hackers’ promise to destroy the stolen data, according to GovInfoSecurity. The notification will go to a yet-undisclosed number of individuals. The breach underscores concerns about the security of medical research data, with overlying implications for patient privacy and data handling practices.
