Google Brings AirDrop Compatibility to Android’s Quick Share Using Rust-Hardened Security

Google has updated Android’s Quick Share to be compatible with Apple’s AirDrop, enabling cross‑platform file and photo transfers between Android and iPhone devices, initially limited to the Pixel 10 lineup with plans to expand to other devices. To transfer from a Pixel 10 to an Apple device, the Apple user must have their device discoverable for 10 minutes, and Android users must set Quick Share to Everyone for 10 minutes or receive mode, according to a Google support document.

According to Google, the interoperability is built with the same rigorous security standards as other Google products, and the data does not route through a server, with a multi‑layered security approach that uses memory‑safe Rust to create a secure sharing channel. A independent assessment by NetSPI in August 2025 said the implementation is reasonably more secure and does not leak information, though it noted a low‑severity information disclosure vulnerability (CVSS 2.1) that Google has addressed.

The news comes as Google reported blocking over 115 million sideloading attempts in India and is piloting a feature with financial services to combat screen‑sharing scams. The announcement was made on 21 November 2025 by Ravie Lakshmanan for The Hacker News.
