A U.S. court sentenced Maksim Silnikau, the founder of Ransom Cartel, to 16 years in prison for orchestrating a ransomware-as-a-service operation. Silnikau, known by various aliases, launched Ransom Cartel in 2021 after extensive experience in cybercrime forums since 2005. He provided affiliates with necessary tools and a platform to manage ransom negotiations, targeting a minimum revenue threshold of $10 million from victims.
His organization was linked to attacks against at least 18 companies, both domestic and international, before his arrest in July 2023. Silnikau is also facing separate charges regarding a malvertising scheme. The case illuminates the evolving legal consequences faced by cybercriminals.
