‘Vibe Working’ Is Here: Microsoft Introduces AI Agent Mode for Word and Excel
Microsoft is pushing a concept called “Vibe Working” by extending its AI tools into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with a feature called Agent Mode, aimed at a new generation of collaborative workflows that reduce repetitive tasks. According to Microsoft, users can generate an initial draft with a brief prompt via Copilot Chat or the Office Agent and then refine it through iterative interaction with AI until the result is polished.
Agent Mode is currently available in Word and Excel, with PowerPoint support expected in future updates; desktop support is anticipated soon, and early testing is open through the Frontier Program on the web version. For Excel, Microsoft says the AI can “understand Excel” to help users who are unfamiliar with advanced formulas or macros, and benchmark results in SpreadsheetBench show 57.2% accuracy in Excel tasks versus a human average of 71.3%.
In Word, Agent Mode can draft, summarise, edit, expand content, or rewrite documents to match a user’s preferred style, while Microsoft has not disclosed Word-wide accuracy metrics. Office Agent can also operate within Copilot Chat to generate PowerPoint or Word documents via conversational prompts, blending OpenAI and Anthropic models across scenarios to maximise output quality.
