A recent report by Action1 reveals that AI and automation have not met the expectations of system administrators (sysadmins) regarding their impact on IT and security workflows. A survey of over 1,000 sysadmins indicated a significant gap between predicted and actual AI adoption across various tasks like patch management and incident detection, with expectations of full automation in 2024 not being realized by 2026.
Despite this, AI utilization is growing selectively, with sysadmins using AI mainly for analysis and recommendations rather than full automation, due to concerns over privacy, accuracy, and decision-making authority. The report shows nearly half of sysadmins now use AI for troubleshooting, experiencing a rise in AI integration knowledge from 24% in 2023 to 58% in 2026.
