NVIDIA has announced it will acquire the AI software platform Hugging Face for $13 billion, in a deal that signals the chipmaker’s strong push to back open-source AI development. Nvidia says Hugging Face currently supports more than 3 million models, 500,000 data sets and 1 million applications, with over 200,000 companies using the platform.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang described Hugging Face as a crucial hub for developers, researchers and organisations that want to download and tailor open models rather than rely solely on proprietary AI services.
The agreement includes $1 billion earmarked for a retention plan to keep Hugging Face employees. Nvidia stresses that Hugging Face will remain an open platform after the acquisition and will continue to support multicloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment. The deal arrives after a wave of high-profile AI security incidents and amid broader industry debates about the security and governance of increasingly capable models.
