Windows 11 Notepad to Receive AI Upgrade for Free Text Writing and Summarizing

Microsoft has announced a significant upgrade to Windows 11 Notepad, introducing AI-powered writing assistance directly into the classic text editor. The update adds three core functions—Write, Summarize, and Rewrite—accessible via the right-click context menu and designed to work with both on-device local AI models and enhanced cloud models. For Copilot+ PC owners, the local AI model operates completely free and unlimited, requiring no subscription or internet connection.

On-device processing is highlighted to preserve privacy and enable functionality even when offline, with users able to switch between local and cloud models depending on their subscription status and hardware capabilities. The AI features currently support English only, and the rollout initially targets Windows Insiders in Canary and Dev channels, with broader availability expected in coming months.
