JetBrains Makes RubyMine Free for Non-Commercial Use
On 3 September 2025, JetBrains announced that RubyMine will move to a non-commercial free model, joining other free offerings such as CLion and an AI Assistant free tier, according to blog.jetbrains[.]com/ruby/2025/09/rubymine-is-now-free-for-non-commercial-use/. Non-commercial use is defined as development that does not generate income, covering students, hobbyists, unpaid open-source contributors, and content creators; users who produce revenue with RubyMine must purchase a commercial licence.
The free licence remains valid for one year, and if the IDE has been used in the last six months of that period, it will automatically renew, otherwise users must reaccept the non-commercial agreement. Activation involves installing RubyMine 2025.2.1 or later, selecting Non-commercial Use in the licence dialog, and signing into a JetBrains account to accept the terms.
Some limitations apply, including restrictions on certain features such as Code with Me, which is limited to the community version, and telemetry data collection by default, though JetBrains says data is anonymised and not used to collect user code.
