New Windows 11 Tools: Point-in-Time Restore & Network-Enabled Recovery Environment
Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will gain a suite of new recovery tools designed to help users restore systems after catastrophic failures, including updates or drivers that cause crashes. The first feature, Point-in-Time Restore, lets users roll back to an exact earlier state, with snapshots captured automatically every 24 hours and persisting for 72 hours, and restoration possible directly from these snapshots within the WinRE environment.
A second feature adds network-enabled Recovery Environment support, so WinRE can connect to the Internet automatically by extracting necessary network drivers from the main Windows installation, with initial support limited to Ethernet and Wi‑Fi (WPA2/3) to follow. A third addition, Cloud Rebuild, targets enterprises by allowing IT administrators to configure OS installation data so that user data is preserved during reinstallation via OneDrive for Business.
The article notes these capabilities are part of Windows 11’s broader push to keep PCs operational or recover them swiftly when failures occur, and that a public display‑device feature will hide error dialogs on screens in view.
