Brain Meets Brawn: Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind Unite for the New Atlas

On 7 January 2026, Boston Dynamics announced at CES 2026 a strategic partnership with its former parent, Google DeepMind, to integrate Gemini Robotics foundation models into the Atlas humanoid robot. The collaboration plans a joint research programme aimed at creating an ultimate robot that combines a cerebellum for motion control with a powerful brain for AI-driven reasoning.

The new-generation Atlas unveiled at CES will feature human-scale robotic hands, rotary joints and tactile sensing, capable of lifting objects weighing up to 110 pounds (approximately 50 kilograms). Driving this collaboration behind the scenes is Hyundai Motor Group, with initial focus on industrial applications and automotive manufacturing as the primary testing ground.

Hyundai plans factory trials of the Gemini-powered Atlas later this year, with the goal of deploying the robots on production lines by 2028 to handle tasks such as sorting components that require both fine motor skills and contextual judgment.
