Beating XLoader at Speed: Generative AI as a Force Multiplier for Reverse Engineering

Check Point Research sets out how Generative AI can act as a force multiplier for reverse engineering XLoader, a malware family known for multi-layer protections and runtime decryption. The report, dated 3 November 2025, contrasts two AI-assisted workflows: a live MCP integration that connects ChatGPT with IDA Pro, x64dbg and a VM for real-time analysis, and an offline cloud pipeline that processes a full IDA export (JSON/text) without a live toolchain.

It highlights how AI helped identify complex decryption schemes, track stage-based RC4 key derivations, and produce working scripts to decrypt and reconstruct code across multiple iterations. The researchers describe three function-decryption schemes, plus additional schemes for API deobfuscation and domain recovery, with the AI enabling rapid prototyping of IDAPython scripts and verification through memory dumps and live debugging where needed.

While the AI markedly reduced manual triage time and improved reproducibility, the authors caution that human oversight remains essential for tackling the most intricate, version-specific artefacts. They conclude that generative models can accelerate analysis and IoC generation, though malware authors will likely adapt in response.
