MICROSOFT is developing a new cloud rebuild feature in Windows 11 aimed at assisting users in recovery after a system failure. This feature, currently in testing with Windows Insider Preview builds, allows users to download and reinstall the OS image and drivers directly from the cloud via the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), without the need for external media.

Unlike the existing 'Reset This PC' cloud download option, which requires some operational OS, the cloud rebuild can restore systems that cannot boot at all but will erase all user data in the process. Users will be warned of this data loss before proceeding with the rebuild. To use it, one must access WinRE, confirm data loss, and have a network connection. A fallback method for entering WinRE is also provided, involving multiple forced shutdowns.
