Hang Up the Phone: Microsoft Retires Telephone Activation for an Online Portal

Microsoft is retiring its telephone activation service for an online activation portal, a change that appears to be recently implemented after years of use. The piece notes that during the Windows 8 era, MAK (Multiple Activation Key) volume licenses circulated widely and that some keys had no activation limit, reactivating via the telephone system. The system previously relied on an algorithmic generator to create activation IDs, enabling activation even without internet connectivity.

A user known as @TheBobPony found that the telephone activation process now redirects to Microsoft’s website to complete activation, suggesting telephone-based activation is no longer available and that online activation may be required for all products, though no specific products are named. The article also emphasises that fully offline activation could still exist in certain environments, as Microsoft may have moved the mechanism online rather than completely abandoning offline, algorithm-based activation.
