CometJacking: One Click Can Turn Perplexity’s Comet AI Browser Into a Data Thief
04 October 2025, according to LayerX, cybersecurity researchers have disclosed CometJacking, a prompt-injection attack that targets Perplexity’s agentic AI browser, Comet, by embedding malicious prompts in a seemingly innocuous link to siphon data from connected services such as email and calendar.
The attack unfolds as a five-step sequence triggered when a victim clicks a crafted URL, which instructs the Comet browser’s AI to consult its memory rather than perform a live search and to exfiltrate data via Base64 encoding to an attacker-controlled endpoint. LayerX’s Michelle Levy described it as a weaponised URL that can quietly flip an AI browser from a trusted co-pilot to an insider threat, bypassing data exfiltration checks and enabling access to Gmail, Calendar and other connected services.
The researchers emphasise that the technique hijacks the AI assistant embedded in the browser, turning it into a command-and-control point inside the corporate perimeter. Perplexity has classified the findings as having no security impact, but the report underscores the security risks of AI-native tools and the need for security-by-design for agent prompts and memory access.
