The Next Billboard: Apple Maps is Set to Launch Search Ads in 2026
In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman revealed that Apple’s plans to expand its iOS advertising business are “making progress,” with the next likely target being the built-in Apple Maps app. According to Gurman, users could see integrated ads as early as next year.
The initiative would allow restaurants and other businesses to pay for enhanced visibility within map search results, placing their listings more prominently for users, and would mirror the Search Ads system in the App Store. A similar approach has long been implemented by Google, whose Google Maps platform enables paid placements as a significant component of its advertising revenue.
The report also noted that Apple intends to leverage artificial intelligence to keep ads relevant and useful, while aiming to deliver a cleaner, more refined presentation than rival platforms. However, Gurman cautioned that this strategy carries the risk of consumer backlash, as map services are expected to provide objective and accurate geographic information.
