Storms, Quakes and Shutdowns Reveal Global Internet Fragility

In Q2 2026, notable Internet disruptions were documented by Cloudflare, highlighting the complexity and fragility of network connectivity worldwide. Major incidents included Super Typhoon Sinlaku affecting Guam with an 80% drop in local traffic, and significant earthquakes in Venezuela showing a sharp decrease in HTTP traffic from affected ISPs. Meanwhile, Tanzania experienced power outages leading to connectivity loss, and Iran began to partially restore Internet access after an 88-day blackout.

Government-mandated shutdowns were frequent in Sudan, where connectivity was actively controlled during exam periods. Additionally, DNSSEC configuration issues in Germany and a cable cut in Saint Lucia demonstrated vulnerabilities in Internet infrastructure. Overall, these disruptions emphasized the importance of robust, redundant systems in maintaining connectivity during crises.
